Nplate ® Therapy and Sustained Platelet Counts
Nplate® has been studied in two 6-month phase 3 clinical trials and an on-going extension study. Approximately 80% (100 patients) of patients from the two 6-month phase trials enrolled in the Nplate® extension study. Half of the patients in the extension study received Nplate® for at least 60 weeks, and a few patients were on Nplate® for as long as 96 weeks.1 In this study, platelet counts were increased and sustained regardless of whether patients had received Nplate® in the prior studies. The extension study is an on-going study. In December 2008, data was presented showing patients on Nplate® for up to 4 years in the extension study. 142 patients chose to receive Nplate® treatment in the extension study. Patients were treated for up to 204 weeks (average, 69 weeks). Platelet response was achieved by 74% of patients at one or more points during the study.2,3,4
A different way to treat ITP
If you are currently on Nplate®, then you may be aware of its benefits and risks and how it is different from traditional treatment options. Talk to your doctor about how long you should continue to use Nplate®.
Why you should continue weekly Nplate® therapy:
- Nplate® was shown to consistently increase and sustain platelet counts over
the long term.1 Individual patient results may vary.
- Nplate® allowed most adult patients who were receiving corticosteroids or
other medications to reduce or discontinue them.1
- Nplate® is a once-weekly injection that helped raise platelet counts within one
to three doses.1 Individual patient results may vary.
- Nplate® works by increasing platelet production and does not affect your
immune system.1
- The most common side effect was headache, and most adverse events were
mild to moderate in severity.1
- After discontinuing Nplate® therapy, some patients experienced more severe
thrombocytopenia than they had before initiating Nplate® therapy.1
- Nplate® is only available through the Nplate® NEXUS Program.
Talk to your healthcare provider to see if Nplate® is right for you.1
Nplate® has been shown to increase and sustain platelet counts when administered regularly.
Nplate® is given once a week for as long as your healthcare provider thinks is appropriate.
Some questions you may want to ask your healthcare provider should you discuss other treatment options:
- What are my treatment options?
- What are the benefits and side effects of these treatments?
- Are there any considerations I should have when taking this ITP treatment alone, with other medications, or with nutritional supplements?
- How does Nplate® differ from other ITP medications?
- How long will it be before I know the treatment is working?
- How frequently do I need to receive this treatment?
- How often do I have to get my platelet counts checked on this treatment?
- Are there any symptoms or problems I might have during treatment that I should immediately tell my healthcare provider about?
You should talk to your healthcare provider about any questions or concerns you have about your disease or your treatment.
